A letter from Norman Sasowsky, the recognized authority on Marsh, accompanies this painting. It states:

Marsh’s title for the painting was: “500,000 Czechs on Nazi Border.” He listed it as being 18 x 24. It is signed in the lower right: REGINALD MARSH 1938. The medium is egg tempera. There are several glazes according to his notes: “egg wash thick”, and a French final varnish. The subject is a woman standing on a Times Square subway platform reading a newspaper, train approaching at left, and another woman, holding a box in the right section, coming down the stairs. This is one of Marsh’s classic NYC subway paintings. …He noted that the painting was sold to someone in Alabama, #102 in his records, painted between May 19th – November 8th. I located this information in my copy of Marsh’s personal records. …The quality of the painting is high and it is an excellent example of Marsh in this medium as a painter in the late 30’s, probably his most important era.
