Founded in 1986, Owen Gallery is an American fine arts gallery specializing in late 19th and early 20th century American paintings. The gallery concentrates its efforts on works executed between 1880 and 1950, including American Impressionism, the Ashcan School and American Modern. The gallery is located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, diagonally across from the Whitney Museum of American Art, and occupies three floors of an historic 1870s townhouse.

Under the guidance of Michael Owen and Jim Yost, Owen Gallery has presented important exhibitions that explore and promote the significance and beauty of American paintings. At its foundation is the gallery’s ongoing work with the group of artists known as The Eight, which has culminated in four important exhibitions on this group and afforded the gallery the opportunity to showcase some of the great paintings of the period. The gallery’s close relationship with The Eight has been furthered with single-artist exhibitions on Everett Shinn, William Glackens, George Luks and Robert Henri.

Other notable exhibitions presented by the gallery include Modernism-An American View; Theodore Robinson; American Modern & The Downtown Gallery; Frank Duveneck & Elizabeth Boott Duveneck; American Impressionism; Thomas Hart Benton; and Off the Northeast Coast.

Since its inception over twenty years ago, Owen Gallery continues to contribute to the scholarship of American paintings and provide private collectors with exceptional works. As the art market evolves, the gallery strives to remain attentive to its clients’ needs and interests by offering a varied selection of high quality examples of fine art and providing an ideal venue for selling paintings with complete discretion and privacy.

Michael Owen
Michael Owen has been an active member of the art community for over thirty years. Joining Sotheby’s in 1979 as part of the 19th Century Paintings department, he was later promoted to Fine Arts Representative. This position required critically examining thousands of works of art and developing expertise in all genres and periods of European and American painting.

From this broad knowledge, Michael focused his attention and expertise on American paintings and in 1986 founded the Owen Gallery. As co-owner and President of the gallery, he plays a continuing role in the scholarship and presentation of American art while contributing to the growth of the American art community.

A recognized authority on the works of The Eight and the Ashcan School, Michael is also an expert on the work of Yasuo Kuniyoshi. In addition, he is President of the Thomas Hart Benton Catalogue Raisonné Foundation and a member of the expert committee.

Jim Yost
Jim Yost joined and became a full partner of Owen Gallery in 1989. As co-owner and Director of the gallery, he has been a driving force behind the presentation of the gallery’s important exhibitions. His broad knowledge of American paintings, particularly The Eight and the Ashcan School, has complemented Owen Gallery’s continued expertise in these fields.

Jim has also been involved with art community for over thirty years and brings an extensive knowledge of conservation and framing to Owen Gallery.

Andrew Thompson, Agent
Andrew Thompson joined Owen Gallery in 1999 and works primarily with private collectors in placing important American paintings in their collections. He brings over a decade of focused scholarship of American paintings to advise clients and facilitate the development of their collections.
