The pioneering figure in the modern American art movement was Edith Halpert, the owner and director of The Downtown Gallery from 1926 until her death in 1971. She encouraged and supported her artists, who were among the most important of their time, as well as the neophyte collector. This exhibition brought together a number of artists represented by Halpert, including Guglielmi, Marin, Weber, Kuniyoshi, Spencer, O’Keeffe, Shahn, and Stuart Davis.
