The celebrated painter, Frank Duveneck, established his place in history as the leader of a group of artists in Germany known as the Munich School. These expatriates were important American artists drawn to Europe for inspiration. Duveneck was quite successful, and many of his best works–dark, brushy portraits–were from this period. This exhibition also featured works by the artist’s wife, Elizabeth Boott, who was an accomplished artist in her own right. However, their happy marriage came to an abrupt end with Elizabeth’s untimely death in 1888. Later in Duveneck’s career, he returned to America and spent his summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts where he painted subjects from this famous fishing town.
