Frederick William MacMonnies was one of the premier American sculptors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The protégé of the venerable Augustus Saint Gaudens, MacMonnies became very popular through the work of his public commissions and achieved strong success through the casting of sculptures for private collectors.

Along with Pan of Rohallion , architect Sanford White arranged the commission of Young Faun with Heron . This bronze was created to decorate an exterior niche at Naumkeag, the estate of wealthy Massachusetts landowners Ambassador and Mrs. Joseph H. Choate. The dynamic yet compact composition of the figures and the textural contrast between the lithe faun and the bird’s feathers illustrate MacMonnies’ remarkable sculptural elegance. The original 6½-foot tall structure now stands in the Afternoon Garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
